SMO and SEO - are they the same? what do they mean?

We have been experiencing a lot of hype around a new buzz word “Social Media Optimisation” or SMO – so is this an extension of SEO or a completely different disapline?

Well from what we can determine from other posts, tweets etc the substance of SMO consists of two parts: Social media features such as RSS feeds, sharing or add this buttons, user ratings and polling tools.

The second part being promotional activities via blog posts, commenting on other blogs, participating in forums and discussion groups and status updates on social networking profiles.

So should SMO be part of your search engine marketing strategy - we believe the answer is yes, social networking maybe indeed as important to your SEO and SEM strategy as Link Building as it can drive traffic from other sources other than search engines.

SMO increases your online reputation via Online reputation management (ORM) or Search Engine Reputation Management (SERM) which should indeed be addressed as part of your search marking strategy.

SMO is often spoke about in the same vein as viral marketing as it is creating a virtual word of mouth through the use of networking via social networking and bookmarking, video and photo sharing sites.

SMO can indeed help your product/service development, recruiting, employee engagement and turnover, brand building, customer satisfaction and relations, business development and more therefore we believe it should be intergrated within your SEO/SEM strategy.

The disapline involved to create good SMO can adopt more of a sales message or an incentive to interact so it does not require as much of a technical bent as SEO – however that is not to say they should be treated separately.

Is SMO the new SEO – no but it should be considered as part of it. We predict as social networking increases in popularity SMO is going to play a major role.
